Content Description
Drawing books, loose sketches, and photograph albums created by Walter L. Head of Bangor, Maine. The drawings and sketches feature landscapes and waterfront scenes of Bangor in the late 19th century including houses, ships, and people. The photograph albums are primarily of Islesford, Maine, featuring coastal scenes, sailboats, and family members. A booklet of drawings titled "Panorama of the War" contains illustrations representing Fort Sumpter, Bull Run, and Great Bethel. Some drawings may be by Walter L. Head's father, Daniel B. Head.

Biographical Note
Walter LeBaron Head (1855-1930) of Bangor, Maine, was the son of Daniel Bailey and Helen Reynolds Head. At age 17 he began working for the wholesale grocers Charles Hayward and Company as a traveling salesman. In 1886 he became partner of the company and in 1911 he became president. Head married Mary Alice Brett in 1891. The couple had three children: Alden Fairfield, Francis, and Mary Elizabeth. Head served as a trustee of the Bangor Savings Bank, Eastern Maine General Hospital, Orono Pulp and Paper Company, and Merchants National Bank. He participated in many social organizations including the Tarratine Club and the Conduskeag Canoe and Country Club. (Source: Bangor Daily Commercial obituary, July 8, 1930)
Biographical Note
Daniel Bailey Head (1826-1905) was born in Pembroke, New Hampshire on July 31, 1826. His parents were Captain Joseph and Sarah Bailey Head. He settled in Bangor, Maine as a sign and ornamental painter with a shop at 22 Hammond Street. Daniel was married to Helen Reynolds (1830-1859) and the father of Walter L. Head. In 1893 Head married Dora E. Smith. He died on May 28, 1905.
