Historical Note
The Aroostook Hebrew Community Center (1953-2014) was located on Maple Street in Presque Isle, Maine. It was built to serve the religious and social needs of the Jewish community in Aroostook County and neighboring Canadian towns.
Timeline
- 1937
- B’nai B’rith Lodge chartered.
- 1938
- First observance of High Holidays held at Presque Isle High School.
- 1947
- Torah presented by Hiram Adelman of Mars Hill to the Jewish community now comprised of about 40 families.
- 1952
- Building completed in time for High Holiday services.
- 1953
- Dedication ceremony held on October 25th.
- 2014
- Temple closed. Building sold to neighboring business, prayer books transferred to Bangor for burial.
