Biographical Note
John J. Friend (1835-1924) of Bangor, Maine, was a harness maker and poet who chronicled many local events in verse. Friend was the son of Matthew and Ellen Friend of Carrick, County Tipperary, Ireland. He married Ellen Foley, also of Ireland, in 1870. They were members of St. John's Catholic Church and had four sons and four daughters. Friend is buried in Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery.
