Biographical Note

John Gregg Utterback (1872-1955) was a businessman and U.S. Representative from Maine. He was born in Franklin, Indiana, to James and Hannah (Maddock) Utterback. He settled in Bangor, Maine, in 1905 and established a carriage dealership, which later became an automobile dealership. Utterback became a member of the Bangor Common Council in 1912, alderman in 1913, and mayor in 1914. He was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third Congress (March 4, 1933-January 3, 1935) and was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1934. He served as a United States marshal for Maine from 1935 until his resignation in 1944.
