Biographical Note

Charles Eugene Tefft (1874-1951) was an American sculptor born in Brewer, Maine. Tefft studied sculpture with Frederick Ruckstull at the Artist-Artisan Institute in New York City. He set up his own studio in Tompkinsville, New York, and later in Guilford, Maine. His statue of Hannibal Hamlin is one of Maine's two statues in the National Statuary Hall Collection located in the US Capitol. Tefft created several Bangor statues and memorials including Hannibal Hamlin and Victory in the Norumbega Parkway, the River Drivers in Peirce Memorial Park, and the Memorial Fountain in Summit Park.
